thalassa
Thalassa is the Greek primordial goddess of the sea and a consort of Pontus. Gaius Julius Hyginus gives a description of her in the preface to his Fabulae as daughter of Aether and Hemera. She spawned the tribes of fish together with her male counterpart Pontus. The other marine couples, Poseidon and Amphitrite, Oceanus and Tethys replaced Thalassa and Pontus. There were many fables devoted to Thalassa by Aesop and she has been depicted in both artistic and literary works during the Common Era.
