pontus
Pontus is an ancient pre-Olympian sea god and one of the Greek primordial gods. Pontus was Gaia's son and had no father, but the Greek poet Hesiod states that he was born without coupling, though Hyginus states that Pontus is son of Aether and Gaia. A Roman sculpture of the 2nd Century AD, depicts him rising from the seaweed, holding a rudder with his right hand and leaning on the prow of the ship. He wears a mural crown, and accompanies Fortuna as twin patron deities of the Black Sea port of Tomis in Moesia.
