Athena is the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, mathematics, strength, war strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill in ancient Greek religion and mythology. She is the virgin patroness of Athens. Athena was born when Zeus experienced a headache and one of the Greek gods used an axe to cut open Zeus' head and Athena sprang out from Zeus' head, fully grown and armed. She is called Pallas Athena when she accidentally killed Pallas, a daughter of Triton. Athena did not have any consorts or lovers and is called Athena Parthenos. The Parthenon is named in honour of her. Athena was also responsible for turning Medusa into a Gorgon after discovering the desecration of her temple. She was instrumental during the Judgement of Paris and also turned Arachne into a spider after she disobeyed her. Athena usually wears a helmet on her head and carries a long spear.
