poseidon
Poseidon is the god of the sea, earthquakes, storms and horses. He either lives on Mount Olympus or in the ocean. He carries a trident, which he can use to strike the ground with, to cause chaotic springs, earthquakes, drownings and shipwrecks. In some versions of the story, rather than Cronus swallowing Poseidon, Rhea the mother of Poseidon, saved her son by concealing him among a flock of lambs and pretending to have given birth to a colt, which she offered to Cronus to devour. Many of Poseidon's children were gods and also monsters such as the cyclops called Polyphemus. Poseidon is also protective of his children such as when Odysseus blinded Polyphemus with a large stake and Poseidon exacts revenge against Odysseus by sending large waves on him. Poseidon had a competition with Athena to become the protector of Athens but Poseidon lost and Athena became the patron goddess of Athens. According to some Greek references, Poseidon chose Atlantis as his new home.
